Students are assessed on the basis of their performance throughout the year, the results of two written examinations, an individual 10,000 word supervised dissertation and a legislative drafting project. Candidates who successfully complete the programme are awarded the degree of Master of Laws in International Maritime Law.

Every year the Institute presents also a number of Prizes to students who excelled in a particular area of the LL.M Programme, as follows:

- Malta Maritime Authority Prize for Best Performance in the Law of the Sea Examination
- Malta Maritime Authority Prize for Best Performance in the Shipping Law Examination
- Professor Walter Müller Prize for the Best Legislation Drafting Project
- IMO Secretary-General's Prize for the Best Dissertation
- REMPEC Marine Environmental Law Prize
